Everyone’s An Expert

Today has seen a really shameful episode in the life of Arsenal football club.

Am I talking about Arsenal’s failure to spend the money they got from the transfers of Robin and Alex?

Am I talking about Arsenal’s failure to indulge in the last minute spending spree they did last year?

No… neither.

The shame has been the horrible nasty and sometimes violent whinging, complaining, shouting, and general hate that has been aimed at Arsenal Wenger and the club today by people who call themselves fans.

I’m not going to copy some of the disgusting stuff I’ve seen today, especially this evening, but I have been truly sickened today.

Let’s get one thing straight:

- YOU ARE NOT AN EXPERT!

There is one person managing Arsenal, who has a strategy, plans, tactics, and a complete understanding of the team, how he wants it to play, and what each player is capable of.

He has FAR MORE knowledge, information and experience than YOU!

What is it that makes you feel it’s okay to be so abusive to the manager of our club?

It’s fine to have an opinion on who you’d like at the club, or wouldn’t like, and it’s fine to have an opinion of how they’ll do, but it’s not okay to be abusive.

It’s also not okay to be so angry about it. I’ve seen people claiming they’ve been ‘duped’ and ‘lied to’! No you haven’t. I’m pretty sure when Wenger says he’s been ‘active’ in the transfer market, that he’s been doing his damndest to bring in more players and indeed players he values. But that doesn’t mean he’s going to bring in just any old player, just because it’s possible. He wants the right players at the right price, and he’s got EVERY RIGHT to want that.

We all know that by now, he’s repeated it often enough. He hasn’t lied. He manages the team – please try to remember It’s NOT YOUR choice!

The level of hatred, bitterness and anger around at the moment is disgusting. Some people saying it’s not just this transfer window, but a buildup of years of not competing. I’d say we competed pretty well. We’re not splashing the cash the way City have done, no. But don’t tell me we’re a failure as a club – there are at least 90 other clubs in the league who are desperate to finish where we finished.

Of course ‘just’ being in the Champions League isn’t ‘enough’ – it’s not enough when we want trophies. Wanting trophies is one thing – expecting them as if it’s a right, and being angry when you don’t get them, is something different. It’s pathetic, entitled behaviour.

That’s all I have to say, except this: If you think Arsenal owe you trophies, please unfollow me now and never talk to me again.

Very good piece. People think because they’ve watched a little bit of football that they know how to run a team and who to buy. What’s especially funny is anytime a rumour comes out about any player in the world, a large chunk of our fanbase starts to tout them as the greatest thing ever, and someone we have to buy, even if a vast number of them have never watched the player because they play in French Ligue 1 or a smaller league in England, as examples. We have to understand that this club is nothing without Arsene Wenger. He is not perfect, but he is the best manager that this club has ever had. He also knows and wants what’s best for the club. So I agree in full with your article and implore people to see reason. COYG.

“We have to understand that this club is nothing without Arsene Wenger”

Last I checked Arsenal is bigger than ANY one man

      • reznuk says:

Much as I love Arsene, you are absolutely correct there. However, for the moment at least, he is still manager (at least last time I checked).

        • Bobby says:

And the manager said: “If Song goes, we will sign someone in the defensive midfield area, certainly.”

Then doesn’t. So was he wrong then or wrong now?

          • reznuk says:

With the best will in the world, intentions and plans don’t always come to fruition. You have no idea how frustrated annoyed and angry he may be due to his plans being balked by failed negotiations.

  2. Bobby says:

Can you deny that last year’s shopping spree was the difference between 3rd and possibly not even making the Europa league? Success is born out of spending, it’s that simple. And that’s not me knowing better than Wenger, that’s a simple reality behind every coach who ever hoisted a trophy (Wenger included back in the day) So while spending doesn’t guarantee winning a trophy, not spending DOES guarantee not winning a trophy, and that’s what we’re doing, we’re not even trying

    • reznuk says:

So, er, those three players we bought early on in the transfer window… that wasn’t spending money, was it? Duh! Just because it wasn’t *enough* money for you, doesn’t mean they weren’t spending in the transfer market judiciously and appropriately.

    • Bobby says:

No, that’s called trading. We ended up with a PROFIT this transfer window, by definition that’s not spending

      • reznuk says:

Calling it ‘spending’ only if you spend more money than you bring in is utterly stupid – and would leave you in debt by definition. You’re also forgetting (perhaps conveniently) the ongoing salary of the players who came in – if that’s more than the salaries of the outgoing players, you’ve got an ongoing debt to service somehow too.

  3. Mohammed says:

Dude fans attend games at the Emirates and pay a large cut of there wages for tickets, those tickets funds are playing a big role in the club treasury, so plz DON’T TELL ME that arsenal doesn’t owe his fans a trophy!!!!!!

    • reznuk says:

I’m one of those fans too don’t forget, I pay for my season ticket and money to get up there and I work bloody hard to earn the money to do so. In return Arsenal entertain me, and grant me the privilege of supporting the team. That’s the bargain. There is NO other offer on the table. Nobody has ever said “pay for your tickets and we’ll give you a trophy”. Try to, yes, but no guarantees. Anyway, it’s too late, I’ve already told you. HA!
